What are industrial gases?

Industrial gases are essential in many industries, from the food industry to the chemical and medical sectors. But what exactly are industrial gases, and why are they so important?

Industrial gases

Industrial gases are gases that are widely produced and used for a variety of applications. These gases can occur in a gaseous, liquid or compressed state. Well-known examples of commonly used industrial gases include oxygen, nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide, hydrogen and medical gases. These gases and gas mixtures play a crucial role in processes where safety, efficiency and control are important.

Types of gases

There are different types of gases, each with specific properties and applications:

  • Oxygen (O₂): Commonly used in the medical sector, metal industry (such as welding and cutting) and in chemical processes.
  • Nitrogen (N₂): Used in food packaging, greenhouse farming, fire prevention and for creating a paperless office environment where oxygen-rich air is not desired, among others.
  • Argon (Ar): Applied in welding processes and in semiconductor manufacturing.
  • Carbon dioxide (CO₂): Found in soft drinks, fire suppression systems and the agricultural sector, among others.
  • Hydrogen (H₂): A versatile industrial gas used as an energy carrier and in refining processes, among others.

Most commonly used industrial gases

The most commonly used industrial gases are oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, argon and hydrogen. These gases are used worldwide in a variety of industries and are indispensable in many production environments.

Applications of industrial gases

Below is an overview of sectors in which industrial gases are widely used:

  • Food industry: For preservation, packaging and refrigeration.
  • Metalworking: For welding, cutting, heat treatment and oxyfuel welding.
  • Medical: For oxygen therapy, sterilization and other medical gas applications.
  • Chemical industry: As feedstock or process gas.
  • Energy and environment: For water treatment and as an alternative fuel, such as liquid nitrogen or hydrogen.

Technical gases

Technical gases are a specific category within industrial gases and are used in technical and production applications. They can be pure gases or composite gas mixtures tailored to processes such as welding and cutting, laboratory analysis and industrial productions. Some examples:

  • Acetylene (C₂H₂): Used in oxyfuel welding and cutting.
  • Helium (He): Used in leak detection and as a shielding gas.
  • Mixed gases: such as an argon/CO₂ combination for MIG/MAG welding.
