Nitrogen solutions for food processing industry

Fresh food is vulnerable. Oxygen can cause accelerated spoilage. Ripening results in reduced quality and unnecessary waste. By inerting with nitrogen, you extend the shelf life of your vegetable, fruit or meat products. This is possible with Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) from Presscon.

Innovative applications with nitrogen

By adding an inert gas (nitrogen) during packaging, the maturation is paused. This process is called Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP). MAP packaging extends the shelf life of, for example, meat from 3 to 21 days, cheese from 7 to 180 days and fresh pasta from 3 to 60 days, without compromising the quality of the product.

A commonly used gas for MAP is nitrogen. Nitrogen is an inert gas that does not enter into chemical reactions. Nitrogen is odorless and tasteless and is therefore a very good substitute for oxygen. It can also be used as a stabilizing gas, preserving the volume of the package. This prevents the packaging from bulging.

Map's strengths for the food processing industry

  • Extension of shelf life of food
  • Preserve colour and structure of foods
  • Protection of power supply
  • Less to no additional chemical additives (colouring, fragrance, flavouring, preservatives) required
