How does the Presscon Hornit expansion system work?

The Presscon Hornit plant is a nitrogen expansion system for horizontal storage tanks.

The system regulates the total system pressure, consisting of both water pressure and nitrogen pressure, and creates a nitrogen blanket in the expansion chamber. The total system pressure is controlled by nitrogen because the tank height of a horizontal storage tank is about three meters, keeping the water column pressure relatively low.

Expansion at a horizontal buffer tank is accommodated in three different ways:

  • A separate expansion tank next to the buffer tank;
  • A bulkhead in the buffer tank so that expansion is captured in part of the horizontal buffer tank;
  • Lower the spray tube in the storage tank and create the expansion space in the horizontal buffer tank.

The system consists of a nitrogen generator with a compressed air compressor, a set of pressure sensors that measure the water level and pressure at the top of a buffer tank, a vacuum protector for the buffer tank and a control module that controls the nitrogen generator.
The Hornit units are intentionally built open, without a cabinet for the interior. This choice allows easy access for maintenance and also ensures that investment costs are reduced for the end user.

Although Presscon ‘s standard expansion systems range in production capacity from 2 m3 to 16 m3 @ 99% nitrogen gas per hour, we can also design and build custom nitrogen systems for a variety of industrial applications, with capacities up to 1,000 m3 of nitrogen gas per hour (higher pressures possible per request).
