Nitrogen solutions for manufacturing
Within the manufacturing industry, process control plays a major role in product quality, reliability and continuity. Oxygen, moisture and uncontrolled air supply can lead to corrosion, product deviations and increased downtime. Nitrogen is therefore widely used as a tool to ensure that production processes run stably, reproducibly and safely.
Presscon supplies nitrogen solutions specifically tailored to applications within the manufacturing industry, ranging from metalworking and electronics to packaging processes and compressed air management.

On-site nitrogen production for inert processes, fire prevention and quality improvement.
Nitrogen solutions for the manufacturing and industrial sectors primarily focus on the on-site production of nitrogen for inert processes, fire prevention and quality improvement. In many production environments, oxygen is an undesirable factor that can lead to oxidation, loss of quality, increased fire risk and unstable processes.
On-site nitrogen solutions offer industrial companies the possibility to produce high-purity nitrogen gas directly at their own location. This eliminates the dependence on gas cylinders or bulk liquid tanks, including logistics, storage and price fluctuations. Using technologies such as PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption), nitrogen is efficiently extracted from compressed air and used directly where it is needed in the production process.
On-site nitrogen production
In on-site nitrogen production, nitrogen is separated from compressed air using PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption) generators. These systems use carbon molecular sieves (CMS) that selectively adsorb oxygen molecules while allowing nitrogen gas to pass through. This makes it possible to produce nitrogen with a high and stable purity, tailored to the application.
Presscon’s N-Gen systems use High-Performance Pressure Swing Adsorption (HP-PSA). Compressed air is fed into one of two columns filled with CMS. Oxygen is retained in the CMS, while nitrogen gas is discharged to the process. Once the CMS is saturated, the column is depressurised so that the oxygen is released, while the second column takes over production. This alternating cycle ensures a continuous and uninterrupted supply of nitrogen.

Why companies choose on-site nitrogen production
On-site nitrogen production is increasingly being chosen by industrial companies that want to reduce costs and better control their processes.
Ordering, storing and managing gas cylinders using compressed air results in lower and predictable operating costs. In many cases, the investment pays for itself within 12 to 18 months, making on-site nitrogen production a scalable and sustainable solution for modern production environments.
Or volatile gas prices. By eliminating the need to order, store and manage gas cylinders and reducing compressed air usage by up to 50%, food companies benefit from lower and more predictable operating costs. The investment is often recouped within 12-18 months, making it an attractive, scalable and sustainable solution for modern food packaging environments.
Calculating ROI for on-site nitrogen production: Our proven method
We don’t guess, we calculate. For each project, we analyse current nitrogen consumption, gas supply costs and the technical requirements of your machines and processes. We take into account the lower energy consumption of HP-PSA installations, maintenance schedules and expected future growth.
The result is a clear savings model with a clear payback period and a detailed comparison of the total lifetime costs compared to cylinder or bulk delivery. This gives you insight into the financial and operational benefits of on-site nitrogen production in advance.
Applications of nitrogen in manufacturing
Nitrogen is widely used in the manufacturing industry to stabilise processes, improve product quality and reduce safety risks. Depending on the sector and application, nitrogen acts as a protective gas, process gas or inert medium.
Metal processing
In metal processing industries, nitrogen is used in laser cutting and heat treatment furnaces, among other things. During these processes, nitrogen prevents oxidation, rust formation and decarburisation of the material. This results in higher surface quality and less reworking.
Nitrogen is also used as a backing gas in welding. By displacing oxygen at the rear of the weld, a clean weld joint is created that is more resistant to corrosion and mechanical stress.
Food industry
In the food industry, nitrogen is widely used in MAP (Modified Atmosphere Packaging). This involves replacing the oxygen in the packaging with nitrogen, which slows down oxidation and microbial growth. This extends the shelf life and preserves the quality of the product.
On-site nitrogen production makes it possible to continuously have the right gas purity without being dependent on external gas supplies.
Chemistry
In chemical production environments, nitrogen is used to inert tanks, pipes and processes. By displacing oxygen, explosion risks are reduced and unwanted reactions and contamination are prevented. This contributes to process safety and compliance with ATEX guidelines.
Advantages of nitrogen in manufacturing
The use of nitrogen in manufacturing processes offers clear advantages in terms of cost, quality and safety:
- Cost reduction and operational efficiency Less dependence on gas suppliers, lower energy costs and predictable operational expenditure.
- Increased product quality and process stability Less oxidation, cleaner processes and consistent product properties.
- Safety and reliability Reduction of fire and explosion risks, support for ATEX safety and a more stable production environment.
Customised nitrogen solutions for manufacturing
Every production environment within the manufacturing industry has its own processes, requirements and preconditions. That is why Presscon supplies customised nitrogen installations, fully tailored to your specific application and the layout of your production location. We design, manufacture and supply nitrogen generators that fit seamlessly into existing and new production processes.
During projects, we work closely with project and process engineers to design robust nitrogen installations. These systems are fully integrated according to project requirements in terms of capacity, purity, safety and ATEX guidelines. With over 30 years of experience and several patents to our name, we are an experienced sparring partner for companies within the manufacturing industry.
Sustainable nitrogen solutions for manufacturing
Our nitrogen solutions are developed with a focus on energy efficiency, reliability and a long service life. By producing nitrogen on-site, the transport of gas cylinders and liquid nitrogen becomes unnecessary, which significantly reduces the environmental impact.
All installations are designed and manufactured in the United Kingdom, using high-quality components and an efficient design. This results in low energy consumption per cubic metre of nitrogen produced, minimal maintenance requirements and a sustainable solution that fits into modern production environments.

Frequently asked questions about nitrogen use in manufacturing?
What purity do I need?
The required nitrogen purity depends on the application. For simple inerting or fire prevention, a lower purity is often sufficient, while applications such as electronics, soldering or MAP packaging require a purity of 99.99% or higher. We can help you determine the right purity for your process.
How much maintenance does a nitrogen generator require?
Nitrogen generators require relatively little maintenance. Periodic checks, filter replacement and component inspection are usually sufficient. The robust design and long service life of the CMS keep maintenance costs low.
What is ‘nitrogen purging’?
Nitrogen purging is the flushing of tanks, pipes or installations with nitrogen to remove oxygen and moisture. This is used during start-up, maintenance or product changes to create a safe and clean process environment and prevent oxidation or explosion hazards.questions
