Case

Van der Ende Flowers opts for sustainable and biological pest control with Presscon

Van der Ende Flowers, a leading amaryllis grower based in Maasdijk, faced a cultivation challenge: effectively controlling daffodil mites and mealybugs without the use of chemicals. With the phasing out of chemical pesticides in the sector, an innovative and sustainable solution was needed. Together with Presscon, a solution was found that is not only effective, but also contributes to more sustainable cultivation.

The challenge

In amaryllis production, narcissus mites and mealybugs are a persistent problem. Traditional chemical control methods are increasingly disappearing from the market, forcing growers to find alternatives. Van der Ende Flowers is looking for a method that:

  • Can effectively reduce the infestation of amaryllis bulbs
  • Above all, sustainable and future-proof is
  • Does not negatively affect the growth process

Initially, Van der Ende Flowers tested the technology in climate cells at Presscon. The low-oxygen treatment trials proved promising. A field trial was then conducted with a rental unit, which eventually led to the purchase of complete in-house systems. Van der Ende Flowers is now able to protect its own crops.

The solution

Presscon supplied the BPC generator to control daffodil mites and mealybugs. This innovative system lowers the oxygen level in the environment, naturally controlling the infestation.

Implementation Process

✔ Testing in climate cell at Presscon
✔ Field trials with a rental unit
✔ Purchase of own plant for structural deployment
✔ Fine tuning of settings for optimal effectiveness

Van der Ende Flowers is a forerunner in the industry and continues to further optimize technology to achieve the best results.

The results

The system certainly shows results, but the results depend heavily on the right parameters. In addition, there are clear sustainability benefits:

  • Less dependence on chemical pesticides
  • Cost savings on chemicals
  • Organic and sustainable solution for a healthy crop

Van der Ende Flowers is continuing the practice treatments and investing in further optimization of the technology.

Future Vision

Van der Ende Flowers continues to innovate and collaborate with Presscon to further discover which parameters can be used to achieve the maximum result. This project is an example for other growers looking for sustainable solutions in the flower and plant sector.

“Ideally, growers will need to use fewer and fewer chemicals in the future, while still maintaining effective control. If you don’t test, you’ll never find out what works. This system helps us in the transition to more sustainable cultivation. It is therefore nice to continue this transition together with Presscon and thus contribute to a future-proof sector” – Gerard van der Ende
